Message from the Community Spiritual Director
I was in the market last week just as the lady in the bakery was pulling fresh bread from the oven. There was a hard-to-resist, silent, aromatic invitation that caused me to breathe deeply of the aroma that had no boundaries, and permeated the entire store.
Jesus said, “I am the living bread.” There is a fragrance about His life that draws us to eat of Him, so that we may enjoy the abundant, everlasting life. (John 6:51) There is an aroma that spills over with His wisdom, His acceptance of people and His over-the-top generosity of grace and truth. Just as the smell of fresh-baked bread could not be contained in the bakery department, so we as Christians release a delicate scent everywhere we go. II Corinthians 2:15 says “we are a fragrance of Christ.”
I admit that at times I have felt like day-old bread on a shelf at the market that’s been labeled “50% off.” I’m neither fresh, fragrant, nor warm to the touch. There may even be the beginnings of green mold growing. It’s in those moments that I must be soaked in the solitude, silence and worship of Christ so that my freshness and my zeal will return. I’m reminded that Jesus is the living bread, always fresh, always presence and always ready to give life to those who call upon him.
Mmmm, what do I smell? Ah, it’s the aroma of the Bread of Life in the Hi Sky Emmaus Community.
