Message from the Community Spiritual Director

We’re leaving tomorrow (June 5) on vacation. For several months, we have planned our itinerary, chosen the clothes to pack and generally been obsessed with the thought of 7 days together with our family. As I was packing, I remembered a trip I made three years ago to a Women’s Conference in San Diego, California. A limo was picking me up at the airport so I rushed as quickly as I could through the terminal to the luggage area, picked up my bags and headed for the pick up area to meet the driver.  It was a short trip to the hotel and I got settled in quickly.  I wanted to freshen up for dinner so I opened my luggage for a fresh change of clothes.

Have you ever done this, opened your luggage only to discover someone else’s clothes inside?  There was no way I could wear a size 42 sport jacket, size 11½ shoes, and Aqua Velva aftershave.  I checked the outside of the bag and it looked just like mine, but what was on the inside was definitely not mine. You know you just can’t wear someone else’s clothes. I remember the story of David and his trusty sling shot.  King Saul offered David his own royal armor, but it just didn’t fit.  God had prepared David for that day and given him exactly what did fit.  Modest as it was, it worked. 

I think often someone’s stuff can lure us away from our God-given stuff.  How has God been preparing you to serve Him through the Emmaus Community? Perhaps you aren’t suited to be the Community Spiritual Director, but you are equipped and prepared to serve in another capacity, one that is just right for you.  So check your bag carefully. God has packed it full of gifts, talents and ability that fit you perfectly.  Wear them proudly, to glorify the Father.
